Aboriginal Survival Arts

BASIC

Ages 11-18 • ALL DAY EVERY DAY

This class is designed to help you survive the first few weeks if ever lost in the forest. We will make fires by rubbing sticks together, learn shelters, how to purify water, set traps, make hunting weapons and practice awareness exercises. We will be spending time immersed in nature, playing in the creek and learning about the local flora and fauna.

Rocketeers will build & launch individual rockets made of materials common in most homes. Students will also participate in an expert group engineered project to be flown at the Friday performances. It is preferable that students have prior participation in a kit rocket minor class.

Bollywood Dance

If you have a passion and love for dance, this class is for you! Or if Bollywood dance interests you and you’ve never done it before, this class is for you! Bollywood Dance combines traditional Indian dance with contemporary jazz and hip hope moves. Students will spend the week learning a unique and energetic dance and will participate in a group performance on Friday. Be aware this is a fast paced class! A background in dance helps, but is not needed. 

Students who sign up for this class are required to remain for Friday evening performance. Please do not sign up for this class if you cannot commit to remain for the Friday evening activities.

Comedy in the Woods

Presenting the first “Sun Foundation Follies”! Students will learn basic comedy elements through skits, silly songs, and slapstick. Students will perform a revue of classic comedy skits (“Who’s on First”) and novelty songs (“Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah”) on Friday evening. This will be an all-day major class except for Monday & Tuesday when students can sign up for minor classes.

Ever wondered how to track animals? Catch fish? Start fires without matches? Workout like a ninja warrior? Explore Illinois with new eyes in this interdisciplinary new course. Start the week by building a fortified wilderness camp that will serve as our home base as we explore streams and rivers and forests with wilderness warriors Luke McNally and Luke Scalise. In addition students will learn to catch turtles, scout the forest, throw spears, learn self-defense, run faster, raft down the creek, play sports and learn lifelong skills in the field of natural resources including ecosystems, watersheds and wildlife. Inspired by the team comradery of Coyote Games, this course expands on old traditions at camp to broaden students’ exposure to the richness of the landscapes and ecosystems on which humans and animals depend.

Dragonfly Tales

Ages 8-11

Learn about the science of dragonflies and make artwork that celebrates these beautiful insects. We will learn about the diversity, flight, water, migration and transformation that makes dragonflies so amazing. We will visit aquatic habitats to observe dragonflies and learn about the wings that enable these insects to have the longest migration. Learn how to identify dragonflies and their close relatives, the damselflies, and see where they fit in the ecosystems around them.

Here the art supply box is wide open, so the class can learn new techniques with new and familiar art supplies. Drawing & Sculpting from Nature

We will explore the marshes, creeks and woods of the Sun Foundation to observe the larger natural world, taking sketch books with us to make “Nature Notes” We’ll collect leaves and flowers to use along with other specimens (such as preserved fish, frogs, turtles, bones, shells, and coral.) back in our barn to create more detailed art. We will draw and paint with watercolor, pencils and cray pas for two days, incorporating our notes form the natural world. On the third day we will begin working with clay, learning how to translate our ideas into #-dimensions. We will combine our own inspirations and observations of the natural world as well as use our imaginations to create drawings and paintings, and sculptures with clay.

Getting Familiar with Reptiles

Explore the marsh, field and forests in search of reptiles. Learn and explore what makes a reptile a reptile. Must be willing to get dirty and wet. We will catch and release animals at the Blue Heron Farm. Class meets all day on Wednesday, you will not have a minor class that day!

Global Street Art

Students will explore the history of street art as a global phenomenon. By looking at the styles and mediums used in the U.S., Brazil, and Europe students will learn how this art movement dwells in both streets and museums. Participants will also experience team work, cooperation, balance and expression. Activities will include creating a creating a character/name that represents you in your fullness ad create it on stickers, walls, and other found objects with markers and bucket paint. Students should feel passionate about the subject matter and be willing to take creative and personal risks.

Students will use interactive language arts (poetry, songs, storytelling, folktales and make believe). Incorporating the magnificent beauty of The Sun Foundation we will engage our imaginations as we read, write and tell stories in rhythm, with the group and individually. Students will discover and support individual talents and learn to share those talents for the benefit of the class, the camp and those encountered long after class is over. Formerly known as “Storytelling Time,” this new class adds a component of visual creativity to the course. Students will have at least one keep-sake combining picture and story. All week the focus will be on the imagination and creation of artwork based on this Imagination Nation. Kids will be drawing, painting, sculpting and exploring the world around them for inspiration.
