Thank you for your interest in volunteering during the 2019 Art and Science in the Woods summer camp!
Please review these important details before applying.
Junior Teaching Assistants (16 & 17)
We are accepting a limited number of applications for Jr. Teaching Assistant (Jr. TA) positions for teenagers ages 16 and 17. Some classes, such as Coyote Warriors and ASAP are designed for teen students and do not accept teen volunteers. When assigning TA’s, we will note whether you are more interested in art or science, but it is not often possible to assign you to a particular class.
We typically assign two adult TA’s and possibly one Jr. TA to each instructor/class. TA’s should arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. each day and must stay until 3:00 p.m. Mon-Thurs, and until 5:00 p.m. on Friday. We also need a few teens to serve as bus monitors on the buses coming from Peoria (Lindbergh and Whittier). You will not have to pay bus service if you agree to take this responsibility seriously.
It is important that those applying for this position take it seriously. Although you will definitely have the opportunity to learn and have fun, your main function as a Jr. TA will be to assist instructors with the needs of their students. This often requires taking initiative on your own to help students with their work. We usually do not assign more than one Jr. TA per class, and we ask that you give your full attention to the students in your class—especially during large group gatherings.
If you feel you would prefer to be free to participate in a particular class or socialize with your friends, we ask you enroll as a student rather than a volunteer.
Teen volunteers are asked to commit to working at least eight hours before and/or after the program in addition to volunteering during the week of camp.
Teaching Assistants (18+)
As a Teaching Assistant (TA), you will be an integral part of the Art and Science in the Woods team! It takes nearly 100 TA’s to run a successful camp each summer. We are offering each full time adult TA a $50 discount on camp tuition for each child they register (use discount code TA50 at checkout). TA’s will also receive a limited edition 2019 camp T-shirt free of charge.
We typically assign two adult TA’s and possibly one Jr. TA to each instructor/class. TA needs vary by instructor, and we will not assign Jr. TA’s to classes with teen students. TA’s should arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. each day and must stay until 3:00 p.m. Mon-Thurs, and until 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
We also need a few volunteers to serve as bus monitors. Adult bus monitors can sign their children up to ride the bus for free. In additional to helping out during the week of ASIW, we also need help with program set-up and especially clean-up the week after the program. Please indicate on your TA Application whether you are able to help with any of those areas.
Although we encourage you to learn and have fun, your main function as a TA will be to assist instructors with the needs of their students. This often requires taking initiative on your own to help students with their work, and we ask that you give your full attention to the students in your class—especially during large group gatherings. As a general rule, we don’t assign parents to their child’s class. This gives kids a better chance to explore and learn on their own and ensures that TA’s are focused equally on all students in the class. We will take your preference of art vs. science into consideration, but often cannot grant specific class requests.
TA assignments will be sent out in early May. We will kick off our week of camp with a potluck dinner and informational meeting on Sunday, June 9th. You will receive additional information as we get closer.
If you find yourself unable to attend at any time during the week, you must contact Danielle Kreie, or the Sun Foundation office (309-246-8403) as soon as possible so we can arrange for someone else to fill in while you are gone.
Please contact Art and Science in the Woods Volunteer Coordinator Danielle Kreie at email@example.com if you have any questions or concerns.
