Aboriginal Survival Arts
For adults, students, families, Scouts & schools held at Blue Heron Farm, rural Washburn, Illinois
Aboriginal Survival Arts Program (A.S.A.P.) is a group of naturalists and primitive skills specialists with over thirty years of training & teaching experience. In addition to the regular staff, nationally recognized authorities teach advanced skills workshops. A wide range of programs and workshops are offered to students that lead to self-empowerment, independence, and increased learning capabilities.
Art and Science in the Woods
Learn in a beautiful setting; have fun while you’re learning: meet inspiring artists and scientists, who make their subjects come alive for you; work and study the arts and sciences in outdoor settings.
Blacksmithing
The Sun Foundation Blacksmithing Workshops will be held at the rural Edwards, Illinois workshop of Gary Jameson. Instructors will be Gary Jameson, John Simmons, Dave Kervin, all members of the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association. Classes of varying difficulty are being offered. Scholarships are available for Illinois Valley Blacksmith Assoc. members through the Association. Workshops made possible by grants from the Illinois Valley Blacksmithing Association and the Illinois Arts Council, a state Agency.
Clean Water Celebration
The Sun Foundation invites students, teachers, community leaders, and the general public to attend the Clean Water Celebration, April 10th and 11th. This two day, four event program takes place in three different locations throughout the Peoria area. Clean Water Celebration encourages us to learn to improve water quality, to think critically and creatively about adequate and safe water supplies, and to promote the wise use of natural resources.
Community Arts Grant Program
Each year in cooperation with the Illinois Arts Council, the Sun Foundation awards arts grants to rural organizations, schools, and individuals in underserved areas.
Earth's Table Dinner
A benefit dinner to support the Sun Foundation’s Environmental Art and Science Programming. This feast will be made from organic, sustainable ingredients that are selected and prepared by June Restaurant Chef, Josh Adams. The meal will be served in the beautiful outdoor landscapes of the Sun Foundation.
Environmental Field Trips
The Sun Foundation Outdoor Environmental Education program is an interdisciplinary curriculum for all grade levels, held in the Illinois River Valley wetlands, oak-hickory forest, meadows and ancient inland sea fossil beds. It incorporates group games and creative activities within the field of environmental science. The program emphasizes nature study as an activity that draws from and enhances other disciplines: arts, language arts, social studies, and science.
Fossil and Rock Expedition
Please join Dr. Merrill Foster (PhD, Harvard University), Professor of Geology at Bradley University for an exciting day of searching for ancient fossils in the creek beds on the Sun Foundation grounds. Adults and children alike are welcome to join Dr. Foster, a leader in his field, learn about these million year old artifacts. Gentle rain or shine, participants should be equipped to spend the day outdoors, hiking over uneven terrain. Bring lunch, bottled water, rain gear, shoes that can get muddy, a bucket, plastic bags, and a hand trowel.
Gathering Light Exhibition
The Doug and Eileen Leunig “Gathering Light” Exhibition raised $2,000 for operational support for the Sun Foundation! Thank you Doug and Eileen for your generosity and vision!
Organic Farming
Consultations and Presentations for Farmers, Agriculture Students and Teachers, Schools, Government and Community Organizations A Sun Foundation consultant will introduce organic farming methods that increase farm income and improve soil quality by lowering investment risks, producing higher profits than conventional farming, reducing soil erosion, improving tilth and moisture retention within the soil, eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals and waste containers and supporting soil stewardship for future generations.
Osage Self-Bow Class
There is an incredible sense of achievement in shooting a bow that you’ve made from scratch. This class is not just for the hunter, but for anyone interested in bow making.
 
Primitive Fire Making
During this two-day class students will explore Many aspects of primitive fire from where and how to build proper fire structures for survival and primitive living, Material and tinder collection, as well as how to get the maximum use out of a fire when you are in a primitive living situation.
Reptile Expedition
Join Doug Holmes, Peoria Zoo Herpetologist, in finding reptiles and amphibians at the Sun Foundation Center and learn where they live and how they eat. Wear shoes for hiking and walking, as well as clothes appropriate for the weather. Please bring lunch, bottled water, and a snack. The event will still be held in case of light rain.
Sun Foundation Art and Nature Center
Contact the Sun Foundation staff to help you plan your retreat in one of the Illinois River valley’s most beautiful settings which includes a fresh water marsh, oak hickory forests, and meadows. Fees vary depending on length of use and facilities.
Suzuki School of Music
The Suzuki method helps students develop in many ways, including listening and motor skills, use of right and left-brain, self-esteem, prose, and love of music. Parents are an integral part of the Suzuki method and are expected to attend lessons and become the teacher at home. Parents and students are encouraged to attend a class session prior to enrollment. The Suzuki School of Music’s office is located at the Sun Foundation Center in rural Washburn. Violin, viola, and piano instruction takes place at the The Universalist Unitarian Church, 3000 W. Richwood Blvd., Peoria. Instruction begins in late August and meets until May. Summer school classes are offered and need to be scheduled with an instructor.
Winter Warming
This event features the tasting of wines, micro brews, imported beers, delicious, warming foods and luscious desserts. This benefit raises money for many of the children's programs offered by the Sun Foundation
