  • Primitive Fire Making Class with Tom Brown III!!! August 14th and 15th 9 am-5 pm-Only $145.00!
    During this two-day class students will explore Many aspects of primitive fire from where and how to build proper fire structures for survival and primitive living, Material and tinder collection, as well as how to get the maximum use out of a fire when you are in a primitive living situation.

    Students will also learn about and construct the two most universal primitive fire-making methods, The Bowdrill and the Handrill. We will explore all aspects of these two ancient techniques. We will also cover material selection, and modifications for specific environments. By the end of this class you will be able to make a working fire kit anywhere in the world.   • Earth Table Diner-September 12, 2010. This feast will celebrate organic, sustainable ingredients that are selected and prepared by June Restaurant Chef, Josh Adams, and Thad Morrow, Chef at Bacaro Restaurant, Champaign, IL. The meal will be served in the beautiful outdoor landscapes of the Sun Foundation.
    Reservations are non-refundable.
    Social Hour and Live Music will begin at 4:30 pm with Dinner following at 5:30 pm. Music by Preston Jackson and Friends.
    Cost is $125 per person.

  • Blacksmithing-Sept 11 and 12,Sept 18 and 19, Oct 1, 2, and 3. The Sun Foundation Blacksmithing Workshops will be held at the rural Edwards, Illinois workshop of Gary Jameson. Instructors will be Gary Jameson, John Simmons, Dave Kervin, all members of the Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association. Classes of varying difficulty are being offered.

The Sun Foundation works to strengthen & advance the arts & environmental sciences in rural and urban communities by providing quality & innovative programs, services, publications, research, regranting financial support and cooperative efforts for the general public, underserved groups, schools, Illinois artists and local arts organizations.

Since 1973 The Sun Foundation has offered a place to learn and engage in the environmental sciences and arts in a supportive community and an atmosphere dedicated to the highest quality of education.

 

We offer an array of programs for children, teenagers, schools, adults, and active public events.   Our instructors are established artists, scientists and gifted teachers from throughout our region and country. The programs have attracted innovators who provide fresh teaching perspectives in the arts and sciences.
